University Of Peradeniya MOSQUE
Legacy and Origins of the the structure
Situated in the picturesque outskirts of Kandy, the University of Peradeniya Mosque is a serene and cherished sanctuary, providing a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Serving the spiritual needs of the university's Muslim community, this mosque is fondly remembered by alumni who reflect on their prayers and moments of peace within its walls.
The mosque's conception began shortly after Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948, as part of the broader University Complex development. However, the construction was completed in 1971, just before Sri Lanka became a republic. In the early 1950s, H.S. Ismail, founder of the Ceylon Baithulmal Fund, highlighted the absence of a mosque at Peradeniya Campus, noting that other religious groups had their places of worship.
The project received support from numerous benefactors, including prominent figures such as Sir Mohamed Macan Markar and Speaker of Parliament H.S. Ismail. A notable fundraising initiative, the "Buy A Brick" campaign, was launched in the mid-1960s. The mosque’s inaugural Jumma Bayan was delivered in 1968 by Professor S.A. Imam, who was a university lecturer at the time, three years before the mosque's official completion. Initially managed by the Ceylon University Mosque Association (CUMA) from Colombo, the mosque's administration was transferred in the late 1970s to a locally constituted body, the Peradeniya University Mosque Management Committee (PUMMC), consisting mainly of the university's Muslim academic staff.
Over the years, the mosque has seen various improvements, thanks to the "pro bono" contributions of architect M.J.A. Rahim and structural engineer M. Ismail, as well as the dedicated efforts of contractor A.M.L.N. Marikar, who navigated the challenging terrain and intermittent funding with exceptional perseverance.
The mosque is designed across three levels: an upper ground-level prayer hall, a cultural center for male students, and an Islamic library in the basement. It also features a mezzanine level and a hostel, all thoughtfully integrated into the natural landscape. Architecturally, the mosque combines Indo-Saracenic style domes with pointed arches and scalloped arches adorning the portico, yet its design transcends conventional mosque architecture. The entrance to the main prayer hall is at road level, seamlessly connecting the structure to the hillside.
Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a spacious, well-lit portico with wide steps leading to the prayer hall. Inside, the architect’s skillful use of natural light and ventilation creates a serene ambiance. The intricate cement jali screen and clerestory in the main dome contribute to a unique and ethereal atmosphere, with natural light casting a celestial glow. This combination, along with the surrounding greenery, enhances the profound sense of awe experienced within this architectural masterpiece.
The University of Peradeniya Mosque stands as a testament to both architectural ingenuity and communal dedication. It not only fulfills its role as a place of worship but also serves as a symbol of unity and perseverance. The mosque's harmonious blend of natural beauty and thoughtful design creates a serene environment where spirituality and tranquility thrive. As it continues to serve the university community, it remains a cherished landmark, embodying the enduring spirit and commitment of all those who contributed to its creation and ongoing development.
